AfD Expands in Western Germany

Electoral Result
Election results show the anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) gaining ground in Germany's west.
Context
The AfD is an anti-immigration and EU-skeptic populist nationalist party. It's currently the second-most represented party in Germany's parliament; however, its rise has alarmed the German establishment. Germany's internal security agency has designated it an extremist party, raising the prospect of a potential ban. Until now, the AfD's support has overwhelmingly come from the former East Germany, a relatively more conservative and less prosperous region. Election results from this Sunday, though, show support for the AfD expanding in western Germany.
Election Result
The municipal elections in Germany's most populous state – North Rhine-Westphalia, which contains Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, and other major cities – saw the AfD place third.
