Bolsonaro Found Guilty of Coup Charges

Conviction
Brazil's Supreme Court convicted former President Jair Bolsonaro of plotting a coup to remain in power after losing the 2022 election.
Context
Bolsonaro served as Brazil's president from 2019 to 2022, when he lost reelection to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The case stemmed from events on January 8, 2023, when thousands of Bolsonaro's supporters stormed government buildings in Brasilia, including Congress, the presidential palace, and the Supreme Court. The supporters called on the military to remove Lula from office just one week after his inauguration. Prosecutors alleged that Bolsonaro's coup plot included plans to poison President Lula.
Supreme Court Ruling
A five-member panel of Brazil's Supreme Court justices reached the majority needed to convict Bolsonaro on Thursday.
