Democrats Sweep Elections

Democrats Win
Democratic candidates swept major elections in New York City, New Jersey, and Virginia on Tuesday.
Mamdani Wins NYC
Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won New York City's mayoral election, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo (I) and Curtis Sliwa (R). The 34-year-old state assemblyman will be the city's first Muslim and South Asian mayor.
Mamdani campaigned on lowering the city's cost of living through rent freezes, free buses, and a $30 minimum wage. Cuomo and Sliwa both largely campaigned on public safety and split the anti-Mamdani vote.
With 87% of the vote counted, he had 50.4% to Cuomo’s 41.5% and Sliwa’s 7.2%. Mamdani’s inauguration will take place on January 1, 2026.
Spanberger Wins VA
Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) defeated Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) in Virginia's gubernatorial election, becoming the first woman to serve as governor of the commonwealth.
