Grand Jury Indicts Letitia James

James Indicted

A federal grand jury in Virginia indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James on bank fraud charges.

Context

James has served as New York’s attorney general since 2019 and positioned herself as a prominent critic of President Trump. She led a civil fraud case against Trump in 2022, alleging he inflated his business empire’s value for years. A court found Trump liable for civil fraud, though an appeals court later threw out a $500M judgment while upholding the fraud finding. During her campaign for attorney general, James pledged to be “a real pain in the ass” to Trump, and her office filed dozens of lawsuits against his administration.
