“In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in. They're eating the cats. They're eating – they're eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what's happening in our country. And it's a shame.” So said Donald Trump during Tuesday night’s debate.
The ABC News moderator David Muir interjected: “I just want to clarify here, you bring up Springfield, Ohio. And ABC News did reach out to the city manager there. He told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.”
In the past two months, we’ve interviewed hundreds of voters in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Based on their concerns, here’s how Muir should have responded to Donald Trump:

That being said we are aware that people in the community have filed these complaints, including to the city council, and that Springfield is struggling to deal with the influx of migrants, which – rumors about eating animals aside – is a real concern to millions of Americans.
Now Ms. Harris: Under the Biden Administration, the US has experienced record levels of illegal immigration. In the last four years, it’s taken in between 15,000 and 20,000 Haitian migrants, straining local services.
What is your message to voters who are concerned about migration and its impact on their communities?
That’s not a pro-Trump question. That’s a pro-America question, intended to help the country solve its large and very real problems.
