This is the second part of our series on political extremism. Last week, we interviewed a J6er; today, we interview an Antifa member and the group’s victims.
Kenosha, Wisconsin
On August 23, 2020, Kenosha became a warzone.
It was here – an industrial city of 100,000 on the shores of Lake Michigan – where police shot Jacob Blake in the parking lot of a housing project, immediately triggering protests throughout the city. By 10:15 PM, Wisconsin’s governor had declared a state of emergency in Kenosha. Activists showed up in droves to protest what they saw as another unjust shooting during the height of the BLM movement.
The city of Kenosha would pay a heavy price.
Residents told Roca the protests were peaceful at first. Then, as the out-of-towners arrived, the protests devolved into riots. One described what happened next as being “like a movie.” Looting – first unorganized; then coordinated – gripped the city. Within days, the morning sky was “gray and black” from the fog of fire.
“All you could smell was smoke,” one local told us of going to her office during the unrest.
When the burning finally stopped, the city of Kenosha faced millions of dollars in damage, a surge in homelessness, countless ruined lives, two deaths, and national infamy. The cause? One thing, according to locals: Antifa.
In today’s on-the-ground deep-dive, we talk to Kenosha residents and interview an Antifa member to understand what happened in that city, what the group believes, and what it’s doing now.
