🌊 Is a Killer on the Loose?
New Englanders fret about a serial killer, while police insist there is no cause for concern

“Don’t rush to judgment.”
That has been the repeated warning of authorities in New England since a body was discovered in mid-March. Since then, though, the remains of nine other people have been found, prompting widespread fears that a serial killer is active in what is normally one of the US’ most tranquil regions.
To understand how the police and the public have ended up in such different places, we need to begin near Plymouth, Massachusetts, on March 6, 2025 – the day that a hunter was walking through the woods and discovered a portion of a human skull.
Hours later, in a Connecticut town three hours to the southwest, police discovered the body of a young woman in a river near an abandoned bridge. Later identified as a 35-year-old Long Island woman, police said they found the woman’s personal items nearby and announced there was “no indication of foul play.”
And, police added, there was “no indication” of a “serial killer.”
Yet many locals – alarmed by the discoveries of two bodies in normally quiet places on the same day – didn’t buy it.
13 days after that, the remains of a woman between the ages of 40 and 60 were discovered in a suitcase almost exactly halfway between the other two bodies. Police quickly identified the victim and charged her 68-year-old roommate with the murder in what they called a “targeted” crime.
In announcing the charges, authorities reiterated that there was no connection between this killing and the other deaths: “Don’t rush to judgment,” the local police chief warned. But by now, speculation was spreading like wildfire across social media.
And there were still seven more bodies to be found.
