Kimmel Back on Air

Suspension Lifted

ABC announced Monday that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” would return to television Tuesday, ending a suspension that began last week.

Context

Last week, Kimmel said “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” during one of his monologues. ABC suspended the show indefinitely following Kimmel’s comments and after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr criticized the remarks. Carr had warned on a podcast, “We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” suggesting the FCC could take action against ABC’s broadcast licenses.

Major stations, including Nexstar Media Group, which is currently waiting on FCC approval for merger deals, pulled Kimmel’s show from their affiliates.

Disney Ends Suspension

On Monday, Disney, ABC’s parent company, said it suspended production “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.”
