NYT Sues Pentagon Over Press Policies

NYT Sues

The New York Times filed a lawsuit against the Pentagon, claiming new press policies violated journalists' constitutional rights.

Context

In October, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth implemented a new 21-page policy requiring journalists to sign agreements restricting their newsgathering activities. The rules restrict journalists’ physical access in the Pentagon building and make journalists pledge not to publish information not explicitly authorized by the Pentagon. The majority of outlets refused to sign the Pentagon's new press rules.

Lawsuit Details

On Thursday, the Times filed a lawsuit against the Pentagon, arguing in federal court that the policy infringed on the First and Fifth Amendment protections by limiting reporters' ability to ask questions of government employees and gather information beyond official statements.
