Whether Robert Maxwell was a Mossad agent is a question that Big News refuses to ask and that podcasters answer far too confidently.
Alternative media giants like Tucker Carlson, Saagar Enjeti, and Candace Owens assert that Robert Maxwell worked for Mossad as if it were a fact. But thereâs far more nuance, and itâs something of a Rorschach test: If you view Israel as a manipulative, conniving state, youâll likely receive the below information quite differently than someone who views Israel more favorably.
In this edition of We The 66, we draw from multiple sources to establish facts and highlight the strongest claims for and against Maxwellâs ties to Mossad. Also, this is part two of this series. If you missed part one, read it here.

Prior to 1984, 61-year-old Robert Maxwell had never officially been to Israel. His first âofficialâ visit didnât come until British business magnate Gerald Ronson â the uncle of âUptown Funkâ artist Mark Ronson â persuaded him to go. After that trip, Maxwell fell in love with Israel.
As he was flying in on Ronsonâs jet, Maxwell â a publishing mogul who escaped the Holocaust but lost four siblings and both parents to Auschwitz â reportedly repeated, with tears streaming down his face, âI should have come here years ago.â
After his arrival, he met with Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and pledged to become the largest individual investor in the state of Israel. In the years that followed that 1984 trip, Maxwell renewed his Jewish faith and developed close ties to the country. In keeping with his word, Maxwell invested $50M in Israel, buying media properties, investing in defense startups, and sponsoring Holocaust remembrance projects.
But was 1984 really his first trip to the country? Multiple books have cast doubt on this narrative.
Records of what Maxwell did before starting his publishing empire are murky. According to the BBC, after World War II he sold cigarettes and nylons in a black market. He also drew close to the Russians during this period, drawing suspicion from British officials who reported him to the Information Research Department (IRD) and described him as âa thoroughly bad character and almost certainly financed by Russia.â
Former KGB chief Leonid Shebarshin seemed to confirm these suspicions: In a 1996 interview, he said, âMaxwell was a special person. He was received in our highest spheres. In our parlance it was called a âuseful official relation.ââ Per numerous sources in Russia, Britain, and the US, Maxwell maintained close ties with the KGB and Soviet leaders.
But what about Israel?
