It’s not often that Bill Maher, Donald Trump, and Nicki Minaj are talking about the same thing. But in a year of strange ideological eclipses, perhaps you should start to expect the unexpected.

On a recent episode of his HBO show, Bill Maher stared into the camera and declared: “If you don’t know what’s going on in Nigeria, your media sources suck. You’re in an information bubble.”

Maher – an outspoken atheist who rarely goes out of his way to defend Christians – continued: “They’ve killed over 100,000 [Christians] since 2009. They’ve burned 18,000 churches… This is so much more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza. They are literally attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country. Where are the kids protesting this?”

This weekend, President Trump chimed in on the same issue, posting on Truth Social:

Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN’ But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done! I am asking Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately look into this matter, and report back to me. The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other Countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!

And who retweeted that? None other than rapper Nicki Minaj, who shared a screenshot of Trump’s post with the caption:

Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude. We live in a country where we can freely worship God. No group should ever be persecuted for practicing their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order for us to respect each other. Numerous countries all around the world are being affected by this horror & it’s dangerous to pretend we don’t notice. Thank you to The President & his team for taking this seriously. God bless every persecuted Christian. Let’s remember to lift them up in prayer.

So what’s happening in Nigeria? Is it a “genocide”? That’s what we examine in today’s Roca members-only deep-dive.
