There have been dozens of major developments at the FBI since Trump took office. Left-leaning outlets say he’s purging it, hollowing it out, and leaving the country vulnerable; right-leaning ones say he’s ending “weaponization” and curbing the “deep state.”
Today, we cut through the noise and explore what’s really happening at the FBI.

Last week, Emil Bove sent a memo to FBI leadership.
Bove – recently Trump’s defense attorney and now his acting deputy attorney general – said the leaders couldn’t be trusted: "I do not believe that the current leadership of the Justice Department can trust these FBI employees to assist in implementing the President's agenda faithfully," his memo read.
The executives — who oversaw intelligence, national security, cyber-investigations, and the FBI’s science and technology branch — were told to resign or be fired. Some had been heavily involved in the January 6 investigation; all had been promoted under Christopher Wray, the FBI director who oversaw that investigation.
Bove then issued another order.
The FBI’s January 6 probe was the largest single criminal investigation in American history, producing 1,270 convictions and involving 5,000 agents. Bove wanted a list of all agents involved.
Two days later, those on the list received a survey. It asked 13 questions about the employee’s role at the FBI, leading to the question, “What was your/your employee role in the investigation(s) or prosecution(s) relating to events that occurred at or near the US Capitol on January 6, 2021?”
So what’s Trump doing, and why?
