Trump Admin Proposes Asylum Changes

Asylum Restrictions
The Trump Administration plans to propose at the UN General Assembly major changes to international asylum laws, per Reuters.
Context
Current international asylum frameworks date back to agreements signed after World War II in 1951 and 1967. These global agreements, signed by most of the world's countries, established that people fleeing persecution can seek asylum at another country's borders. The existing system allows asylum seekers to choose which country they approach for protection, and asylum status is generally intended to be permanent until conditions in their home country improve.
Proposed Changes
State Department officials developed plans last week for an event during the UN's annual general assembly meeting that would call for reframing the global approach to asylum and immigration.
