Trump Denies Venezuela Strikes

Denial

President Trump denied that he plans to strike inside Venezuela, days after reports emerged to the contrary.

Context

The US claims that the Nicolás Maduro-led Venezuelan government doubles as a drug cartel. In recent months, the Trump Administration has increased the bounty on Maduro to $50M, while building up military forces in the Caribbean and striking at least 14 alleged drug boats off the South American coast.

The strikes and buildup have prompted speculation that the US may try to use military force to topple Maduro.

Reports

Last Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the administration had identified targets that it could strike inside Venezuela. Sources told the outlet that potential targets include airports, ports, naval facilities, and air strips that are allegedly used to traffic drugs. The Journal said that Trump had not made up his mind yet about whether to order the strikes.
