Trump Meets With Dems on Shutdown

Meeting

Congressional leaders were unable to reach a deal with President Trump on Monday afternoon in a last-ditch effort to prevent a federal government shutdown.

Context

The government is set to partially shut down on Wednesday at 12:01 AM if Congress fails to pass a short-term spending bill. Republicans proposed extending current funding through November 21, while Democrats insisted any spending legislation must include additional funding for healthcare programs. Without Democratic support, Republicans lack the 60 votes needed in the Senate to advance their funding package.

Meeting

The Monday meeting at the White House brought together the top four congressional leaders: Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), alongside Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
