Trump Seeks $230M from Justice Department

Compensation Demands

President Trump demanded that the Justice Department pay him approximately $230M in compensation for federal investigations conducted against him while he was out of office.

Context

Before his 2024 reelection, Trump submitted administrative claims against the Justice Department (DoJ) seeking damages for investigations that he characterized as politically motivated. Administrative claims are often filed before lawsuits and require the DoJ to review settlement possibilities before a case can proceed to federal court.

Trump filed two separate claims through this process. The first, submitted in late 2023, sought damages related to the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The second claim, filed in summer 2024, accused the FBI of violating his privacy during the 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago for classified documents.

Compensation Demands

The New York Times reported on Tuesday that Trump submitted complaints through a claims process, which often comes before lawsuits, for a total of $230M in compensation from the government for federal investigations against him.
