Trump Transfers Education Department Programs

Programs Transferred

The Trump Administration announced that it had finalized agreements to transfer portions of the Education Department to four other federal agencies.

Context

President Trump signed an executive order in March directing the secretary of education to begin eliminating the department, which was created by Congress in 1979. Since taking office, the administration has reduced the department's workforce from roughly 4,100 employees to approximately 2,000 through layoffs and retirement incentives. The Supreme Court has allowed the administration to proceed with mass layoffs at the agency.

Programs Moved

The administration signed six interagency agreements on Tuesday affecting billions in federal education funding and transferring portions of the Education Department to other agencies. The Department of Labor will take over the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, which oversees approximately $28B in K-12 school grants, as well as the Office of Postsecondary Education, which administers $3.1B in programs helping students complete college.
