US Considers Plan to Split Gaza into Two

Gaza Split

The US and Israel are considering a plan to divide Gaza into separate zones controlled by Israel and Hamas, with reconstruction limited to Israeli-controlled areas.

Context

The Trump-brokered ceasefire that took effect on October 10 established a demarcation line marking the Israeli military’s area of control. Israel currently controls approximately 53% of Gaza, with its zone forming a buffer around the enclave’s borders while surrounding the area under Palestinian control. The core challenge remains how to disarm Hamas and establish an alternative government that could oversee Gaza, creating a safe environment for the billions of dollars needed to rebuild.

Proposed Plan

Vice President JD Vance and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, outlined the proposal during a news conference on Tuesday in Israel. Vance said the goal was to geographically expand the area that is safe, while Kushner stated that no reconstruction funds would go to areas remaining under Hamas control.
