Good morning, Roca Nation. Here are todayโ€™s four need-to-know stories:ย

By Max Towey

Iโ€™m going to describe two people, and your job is to guess their political party. Ready?

The first is an oyster farmer in New England with a dad bod, dirty hoodie, pit viper sunglasses, and a red beard. He has a deep and gruff voice โ€“ a voice you could hear narrating a Home Depot commercial โ€“ and he uses it to rail on Washington, DC, and corruption. Heโ€™s a military veteran who now spends his days man-handling barnacle traps in a storm-prone harbor on his boat. He comes off as the dad that high school boys would fear if they dated his daughter.

The second is a white, clean-shaven Texas man with neatly-combed brown hair. At first glance, he looks like an extra in The Book of Mormon. Indeed, he is religious: Heโ€™s a grandson of a Baptist preacher and a seminary student himself. He speaks about the Gospels on rusty pickup trucks outside churches with Texas flags hanging on them. Earlier this year, he appeared on Joe Rogan to discuss the Bible; Rogan said he should run for president.

Got your guesses? If you said MAGA Republican, we wouldnโ€™t blame you. But youโ€™d be wrong; theyโ€™re both Democrats โ€“ and running for US Senate.

In todayโ€™s deep-dive, we look at these two figures, their backgrounds and platforms, and what their campaigns say about the future of the Democratic Party.ย
