Since World War 2, the US and its European allies have referred to their relationship as a “Trans-Atlantic Partnership.” This has taken many forms: NATO, the most powerful military alliance in history; the world’s largest trading partnership; intelligence sharing; diplomatic strategizing. Underpinning it all was a belief in “shared democratic values.”
On Friday, VP Vance arrived in Germany with a message: Those shared values no longer exist.
He alleged that European governments were censoring and ignoring their people. He likened them to the Soviet Union and said the greatest threat they faced was neither Russia nor China, but themselves. He accused them of flooding their countries with migrants and then silencing those who were angry about it.
American conservatives celebrated the message, but it hit Europe like a bomb.
As German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in his response moments later, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is not acceptable.” He repeated: “This is not acceptable.”
European newspapers declared the end of the Trans-Atlantic Partnership. Analysts wrote that America had suddenly become an “adversary”; that the US had turned on its closest ally.
