On Sunday, an NBC reporter asked President Trump if he’d rule out running for a third term.

Trump replied, “You have to start by saying, I have the highest poll numbers of any Republican for the last 100 years…We’re in the high 70s in many polls, in the real polls, and you see that. And, and you know, we’re very popular. And you know, a lot of people would like me to do that.”

Indeed, a lot of Republicans would like that.

At the recent CPAC conservative conference, posters were strung up around the event grounds.

“For Trump 2028 ...And Beyond!” they said, with a link to “thidtermproject.com.”

On stage at the conference, Steve Bannon, a leading MAGA voice, declared, “We want Trump in ’28…A man like Trump comes along only once or twice in a country’s history. We want Trump!”

Bannon has since become a routine proponent of Trump running for a third term: “This is why I'm so adamant about Trump 2028,” he said on a recent podcast. “A guy like this comes along maybe once a century in a country's history.”

He’s since elaborated on that, telling News Nation’s Chris Cuomo, “We’re working on it [a third term]. I think we’ll have, I think we’ll have a couple of alternatives…Let’s say that. We’ll see, we’ll see, we’ll see what the definition of term limit is.”

He continued: “This is many years in the making. We’ve had greater long shots than Trump 2028 and we’ve got a lot of stuff we’re working on there…We’re not prepared to talk about it publicly, but in a couple of months, I think we will be.”

On Capitol Hill, Rep. Andy Ogles (R.-TN) is trying to make it real. In January, he proposed legislation that would allow a third term, stating, “[Trump] has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”

And Trump’s Sunday comments were only the latest on the topic.

Shortly after the election, he told a group of House Republicans: “I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we’ve got to figure something else out.'”

Days after his inauguration, he told supporters, “It will be the greatest honor of my life to serve, not once but twice – or three times or four times.” He then smiled to the crowd and said, “Headlines, for the fake news. No, it will be to serve twice.”

He added on this Sunday’s NBC interview, “Well, there are plans…There are — not plans. There are, there are methods which you could do it, as you know.”

But are there really? That’s the subject of today’s deep-dive.
